FAQ- Milk Program
Q. Do I have to weigh every goats milk at every milking when on test?
A. NO, unless you want to. Tthe only time you have to weigh and sample each does milk is during the test which is one day a month.
Q. Do I have to milk for the full 305 days?
A. Not necessarily. The last page of the milk rules there is a chart with 3 columns of numbers. The first column is for the age of the doe at the time she freshened in years and months, IE, 2-6, 2 years 6 months. The second column is the minimum pounds of milk the doe at that age is required to produce to earn her star. The third column is the minimum pounds of Butter Fat (BF) required to earn her star. Some does will meet or exceed these numbers well before the 305 days. This gives the owner the option of drying the doe off early or continue testing in hopes of making the Top Ten. Does may earn their star by meeting either the minimum pounds in milk or BF.
Q. Do all the does in my herd have to go on test?
A. NO. NDGA is only interested in the Nigerian does who meet our height requirements. We do adhere to the DHI rules but understand there are some does who are retired, injured.
Q. Can I test with other registries at the same time?
A. Yes. Again only the Nigerian does who meet NDGA height requirements are eligible to test with NDGA. Some herds have several different breeds or Nigerian does who are over height (OH) for NDGA but fall within another registries height requirements. Testing with multiple registries at the same time is very common and done mostly at shows where there may be several different breeds.
Q. Do my does have to be registered to participate in a milk test?
A. Yes, to have your does production recognized by NDGA, does have to be registered as NDGA is a registry for purebred Nigerian goats. There are other registries available for grade does where you may participate in a milk test.
Q. I only milk once a day and would like to participate in the 305 day milk program so my does may earn a milk star. Can I still participate?
Yes, the doe is still required to produce the same amount as shown on the chart according to her age at freshening and an is on one of the DHI Options like OS, Standard 20, etc. for monthly testing. All other rules apply.
